It’s a Pit, Not a Bean

Why do we call coffee beans “coffee beans” when they are actually the pits of the fruit? Good question. The fruit that the coffee bean comes from is called a cherry. Like all cherries, there is a “pit” at the center, and this is what we refer to as a coffee bean. Experts say it is because the coffee pit looks like a bean and that is why it is given this moniker. Hmm. Don’t try to order ground coffee by ordering coffee pits, it won’t work, even if it is technically a pit. Beans do sound better.
