Have you ever wondered where the idea for the first coffee shop came from? Your local coffee shop has a long history of coffee shops standing behind it but who thought up the idea for this space in the first place?
The history of coffee shops can be traced back to the 15th century. The idea of sitting with friends and enjoying a cup of Joe is almost as old as the desire to find the perfect coffee beans.
It May Have Started In Mecca
While no one can pinpoint the actual date or the actual person that thought to bring people together over a cup of coffee, according to historians, Mecca is likely the birthplace of "coffee houses." Coffee houses were very popular in the 15th century in Mecca, so much so, that they became a part of a huge political debate. Evidently, the ruling class became worried that there was too much political talk happening in these coffee houses. As such, the ruling class banned coffee houses from 1512-1524.
Luckily, thanks to popular demand, that prohibition was stricken and the coffee shops were able to flourish. Imagine if they did not?
In the United States
The United States claims that Boston was the founding city for the first coffee shop. According to this information, the first recognized coffee shop opened in 1676. The Boston Tea Party propelled the coffee culture in the U.S. to a whole new level.
Today, there are coffee shops from sea to shining sea in just about every community. From the coffee shops Knoxville TN loves to the coffee shops in Semi-Valley CA, they serve millions of people each day. About 50% of people 18 and over drink at least one cup of coffee a day.
Americans love their coffee. Many people try to duplicate their coffee experiences at home by purchasing coffee beans online from their favorite shops. It is a great option when you do not have the time to sit for a cup of coffee or want to customize it yourself.
The coffee culture may have started in Mecca, but it has made its mark in the U.S. and continues to grow. There is nothing quite like a good cup of coffee, a friendly staff, and a comfortable place to meet with friends.
