9 Mistakes You're Probably Making When Brewing Coffee

Jan 31, 2023 (Updated on Mar 21, 2023)

Every day, there are millions of people that are brewing their favorite cup of coffee. A cup of coffee has become a morning staple across the country. Millions of people are more than likely making at least one of these nine mistakes.

Not Measuring Coffee

That isn't the way to go. Most of the time, you're only going to need nine ounces of beans for one cup of coffee. Measuring your coffee can ensure that it tastes wonderfully and that you don't waste it by making too much.

Letting Air Get to Coffee

In order for coffee beans to deliver the best flavor possible, you need to store them properly. That means that you need to stop leaving the open bag in a random cabinet in the kitchen. Instead, opt for an air-tight container that will keep both oxygen and humidity away from your coffee beans.

Storing Coffee Near Light

Next, you want to store your coffee away from any source of light. If you have an airtight container that blocks out light, that's fine. If not, store your beans away from additional light to keep them fresh.

Using Stale Coffee

Coffee isn't meant to last forever. While using old beans might not make you sick, it's definitely going to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. You might want to consider writing the purchase date or the date you opened the beans on the container to keep track, especially if you don't drink java every day.

Buying Low Quality Beans

When you buy a product, remember that you get what you pay for. Purchasing cheap coffee that's already ground simply will not deliver the same refreshing taste in the morning that high-quality, freshly ground beans will. That's why aficionados are often willing to pay a bit more for a better cup.

Buying Bargain Instant Coffee

Some of us simply do not feel like grinding coffee beans at six in the morning while trying to get the kids ready for school. However, you can purchase higher quality coffee that is already ground for a better taste, too. Just because something's pre-ground doesn't mean it's poor quality.

Using Cheap Grinders

Again, you get what you pay for. Upgrade your equipment to upgrade your morning cup of joe. If you're intent on grinding your own beans, make sure you're really doing it right and using the best equipment available.

Forgetting Filter Maintenance

Filters that are designed to be used repeatedly need to be cleaned after every use. Not only will dirty filters make coffee taste awful, but they can also be a health hazard. If you use single use filters, make sure to replace them each time you brew.

Using Disposable Drinkware

Disposable plastic, paper, or styrofoam cups may be convenient on-the-go, but your beverage won't taste as good. What's more, you'll be adding to our planet's waste issue. A good cup of coffee deserves a coffee mug or a metal traveler's mug. These keep your drink hot, are a perfect size, and can be used over and over again.

Even if you're a coffee lover, you might be making some of these errors every morning. To make sure you have the best cup of coffee, order quality ground coffee or beans online, invest in your equipment, and taste the difference.
